Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised the opening duo of Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma for their deadly partnership at the top of the order in Asia Cup 2025.
The childhood friends from Punjab have been in excellent form, delivering back-to-back 70-plus stands against Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Shubman returned to the T20I squad after sitting out recent series and was reinstated as vice-captain. While Abhishek leads the run charts with 248 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 206.67.
Pathan highlighted their on-field communication and understanding. “Abhishek and Shubman, their combination is praiseworthy because you need a batter who complements you at the other end. You hear them stitch a partnership, explain things, and ask for singles after a four is hit,” he said on SonySports.
He also shared a moment from the Bangladesh match where Shubman told Abhishek 15 runs had already come in the over, suggesting a careful shot on the last ball.
Abhishek ignored it and smashed Nasum Ahmed for a six. Pathan said, “They try to explain things to each other, but this combination is amazing.”
The duo’s aggressive approach has been vital in India’s strong showing in the UAE, with Abhishek on a purple patch and Shubman providing steady support at the other end.
