IPL 2026: Moeen Ali Slams BCCI Over Mustafizur Release, Links Row to India-Bangladesh Tensions

England all-rounder Moeen Ali has openly criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India over the forced release of Mustafizur Rahman by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2026.

Ali linked the decision to rising geopolitical and security tensions between India and Bangladesh, saying the Bangladesh pacer ended up paying the biggest price for problems far beyond cricket.

KKR had signed Mustafizur for Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction. However, the franchise was later directed by the BCCI to release him, triggering anger in Bangladesh and sparking a wider cricketing row.

Ali said franchise cricket may eventually need to follow football’s model to survive. He suggested fewer international series, major global tournaments, and more space for leagues to avoid political disruptions.

“I honestly feel the solution might eventually look more like football. You have the World Cup, ICC events, maybe one or two big international series, and then the rest is franchise cricket,” Ali said.

The former England player stressed that Mustafizur had earned his contract through years of strong performances and deserved the opportunity, calling the episode deeply unfair on the player’s career.

“I feel the worst for Mustafizur. He earned that contract through years of consistent performances. For his career, that was a massive opportunity,” Ali added.

Ali also pointed to wider political complications involving Pakistan and Bangladesh, warning that cricket cannot keep functioning under such pressure. He said these issues are no longer isolated incidents.

“Something is clearly not right. This isn’t just about Mustafizur. Pakistan, Bangladesh, we all know there are ongoing issues. It can’t continue like this,” he said.

The controversy has already worsened cricket ties between the two neighbours. Bangladesh has imposed an indefinite ban on IPL broadcasts and advertisements, while the Bangladesh Premier League has barred an Indian presenter.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has also requested the International Cricket Council to shift its T20 World Cup matches from India, citing security concerns. Reports suggest the request may not have been accepted.

Ali did not hold back while criticising the ICC structure, claiming the game is controlled by a few powerful voices while others remain silent for personal reasons.

“The ICC has never really been ideal. Everyone knows who runs things. But nobody speaks up. Everyone has their own agenda,” Ali stated.

The Mustafizur episode has raised serious questions about power, politics, and player security in modern cricket.
