IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer Leaves Rohit & Dhoni Behind With This Massive Achievement

Shreyas Iyer becomes the first-ever captain to lead three different teams to the IPL final, a feat not achieved by even Dhoni or Rohit.

Shreyas Iyer has created history in the Indian Premier League by becoming the only captain to lead three different franchises to the IPL final. No other captain not even Rohit Sharma or MS Dhoni has achieved this rare milestone.

A Unique Captaincy Feat

Shreyas first led Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 final, where they lost to Mumbai Indians. Later, he captained Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024. However, despite lifting the trophy, KKR did not retain him ahead of the 2025 mega auction.

Punjab Kings saw the opportunity and went all out for Iyer, buying him for a whopping ₹26.75 crore — the second-most expensive player of the IPL 2025 auction. The move has proven to be a masterstroke.

Punjab Kings Reach Final After 11 Years

Under Iyer’s captaincy, Punjab Kings have now reached the IPL final for the first time since 2014. He has not only brought leadership and calmness to the side but also delivered with the bat in crunch moments. His knock in the Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians played a key role in Punjab’s record chase of over 200 runs.

No captain in IPL history has led three different teams to the final. Iyer’s journey from Delhi to Kolkata to Punjab is a testimony to his leadership skills and consistency as a top-order batter.

Punjab Kings will now face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025 final in Ahmedabad. Interestingly, neither of the two teams has ever won the IPL before, meaning a new champion will be crowned this season.
