England’s star all-rounder Sam Curran lived up to the hype as he became the most expensive player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Punjab Kings won the bidding war and acquired the services of Curran for a whopping INR 18.50 Crore.
Curran went past Chris Morris’s deal of INR 16.25 crore with Rajasthan Royals. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green and England star Ben Stokes also scripted history. While Mumbai Indians bought Green for INR 17.5 crore, Chennai Super Kings splashed INR 16.25 to get Stokes onboard.
Speaking on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Live – Auction Special’, an overwhelmed Curran Sam Curran expressed delight, stating he never had any expectations to receive that deal. The English star also revealed that he had a sleepless and nervous night ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction:
“I did not sleep much last night, was a bit excited, and also nervous about how the auction was going to go. But yeah, absolutely overwhelmed and incredibly humbled that I managed to get what I did. I never had any expectations to receive that.”
The 24-year-old all-rounder said he is delighted to be back with the franchise from where he started his IPL journey. Notably, Sam Curran made his IPL debut while playing for Punjab Kings around four years ago.
“Going back to where it all started for me in the IPL with Punjab, where I did my debut season four years ago. So, to be going back there seems fantastic and I am looking forward to joining a few English teammates as well,” he added.

Sam Curran’s stocks significantly rose after England’s T20 World Cup win in Australia, where he bagged the Player of the Tournament award for his stellar bowling display through the event.
He scalped 13 wickets in six games at an average of 11.38 and an economy rate of 6.52. He was also adjudged Player of the Match award in the final of the tournament for his match-winning figure of 4-0-12-3 against Pakistan.
Talking about his IPL career so far, the Surrey cricketer has played 32 matches in which he has accumulated 337 runs at a strike rate of 149.78. He has also scalped 32 wickets at an economy of 9.21.
Overall, in 105 T20 innings, he has amassed 1731 runs at an average of 20.85 and a strike rate of 135.65 with nine 50s to his name. He has also picked 149 wickets in 138 T20 innings at an average of 25.56 and an economy rate of 8.43.
