Eoin Morgan marked his first win as a captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), beating SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the super over. He was there on the field till the very last and helped his side in securing a great victory. Morgan heaped praise on Lockie Ferguson and appreciated his brilliant bowling skills in the match.
SunRisers Hyderabad won the toss and offered Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. Batting first Kolkata Knight Riders posted 163 runs on the scoreboard as their top-order batsmen Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi all failed in accumulating runs for their side. Andre Russell also didn’t contribute much as he got dismissed after scoring just nine runs. Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik, at the very least, made a brilliant partnership of 58 runs off the final five overs to impel their side to 163.
SunRisers Hyderabad started off well with Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson. At the end of the powerplay, Lockie Ferguson came to bowl and dismissed Williamson on the very first ball of his over. After this, he dismissed Priyam Garg. Bairstow was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy.
After this, SRH skipper David Warner came to bat at number four for the first time in IPL 2020. 17 runs were needed in the final over and David Warner managed to score only 16 runs, directing the match towards the super over.
In the super over, Lockie Ferguson came to bowl and conceded only two runs which Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan chased down with ease.
Eoin Morgan’s Reaction
Speaking in the post-match conference, Eoin Morgan hailed Lockie Ferguson for his brilliant bowling spell in the match and the super over. He also talked about the competitiveness in this match, which was missing in the last two. He also hopes to gain some momentum in further games.
“They’re nice to be part of, get a glimpse into what the guys are about. For Lockie to come in and perform in both phases was outstanding. We’ve been sort of striving to get wins out of the last couple of games, didn’t happen against Mumbai; today we were competitive. It’ll all depend on a lot of match-ups, what we think are the right dynamics at the time [the batting order]. Dre went off the field, we thought he was injured. He came back on and said he could bowl. I think he showed a lot of character to get us to the Super Over after not starting well. He’s a superstar player for us. Hopefully, we can gather up some momentum after this,” Morgan told in the post-match presentation.
