Indian Business Tycoon Mukesh Ambani to Construct New Stadium in New York
Ambanis are planning to build a new stadium in New York for their team MI New York.
The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is being dismantled following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. Constructed on a tight schedule with drop-in pitches, the stadium drew criticism for low-scoring matches.
The temporary nature of the stadium hints at a potential long-term solution. With Mukesh Ambani’s ownership of MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC), reports suggest the Ambani family might be involved in building a permanent cricket stadium in New York City.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) designated the Nassau County stadium for the World Cup in September 2023. Due to the tight time frame, drop-in pitches from Adelaide, Australia, were used. These pitches proved unsuitable for T20 cricket, leading to low-scoring affairs.
Across eight matches, teams batting first only won three times, with teams chasing successfully on five occasions. The average first-innings score was a meagre 108 runs. India’s successful chase of 111 for 3 against the USA stood out, while Canada managed the highest total of 137 for 7, which they defended against Ireland.
Ambanis To Gift MI New York a Permanent Home
The speculation around a new stadium arises from the Ambani family’s ownership of MI New York, champions of the inaugural MLC season. They will kick off their tournament campaign in MLC 2024 against the Seattle Orcas on July 6th at Church Street Park.
A permanent stadium in New York City would be a significant boost for MLC and cricket in the United States. With the Ambanis’ deep pockets and commitment to cricket through the IPL’s Mumbai Indians, they could be the key to unlocking a new era for the sport in the US.
