“India Should Not Play Bumrah in Super 4s” – Sunil Gavaskar’s Advice to Gautam Gambhir
Sunil Gavaskar wants India to rest Jasprit Bumrah for Oman and Pakistan games, keeping him fresh for the Asia Cup final.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that Jasprit Bumrah should be rested for the upcoming Asia Cup group match against Oman and even the Super 4 clash against Pakistan. Gavaskar believes the speedster’s energy should be saved for the Asia Cup final on September 28.
Speaking to Sony broadcasters, Gavaskar explained his reasoning.
“I believe Jasprit Bumrah should be rested, perhaps even for the Pakistan game, so he’s available for the bigger match on Sunday, the 28th. That’s what India should be looking at.”
Bumrah has played both of India’s Asia Cup games so far, picking up three wickets. While he has shown glimpses of his best, there is still some rustiness in his rhythm after returning from injury. Gavaskar feels pushing him too much now could affect India later in the tournament.
Instead of focusing on Bumrah, Gavaskar wants India to use the Oman game to give more batting time to players like Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya. Samson, slotted at No.5, hasn’t had a chance to bat yet, and Gavaskar feels this match is the ideal opportunity.
He even suggested that captain Suryakumar Yadav should demote himself down the order to let younger players get valuable time in the middle.
Gavaskar also advised India to bat first if they win the toss. That way, their batters can face pressure situations and prepare better for the tougher Super 4 clashes against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
