Jasprit Bumrah added another feather to his cap on the opening day of the Test against West Indies, becoming the joint-fastest Indian pacer to 50 Test wickets at home.
He reached the landmark in his 24th innings, matching Javagal Srinath’s long-standing record. Kapil Dev had achieved it in 25 innings, while Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami took 27.
India’s call to bowl first worked perfectly as Mohammed Siraj ripped through the West Indies top order. He struck with pace and movement, leaving the visitors reeling at 90 for 5 by lunch. Siraj finished with 4 for 40 in 14 overs, setting the tone with relentless accuracy.
Bumrah then took charge in the second session. After removing John Campbell in the morning, he dismissed Justin Greaves and Johann Layne, the latter becoming his 50th victim at home.
Bumrah’s fiery spell saw him return with 3 for 42. Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist spin added two wickets, while Washington Sundar chipped in with one. The rest kept the runs tight as West Indies folded for 162.
