South Africa name ODI and T20I squads for India tour, focusing on World Cup prep, depth testing and Nortje’s return.
South Africa have announced their squads for the ODI and T20I series in India, starting later this month. The tour will help the visitors test their bench strength and prepare for two major white-ball world events.
Three ODIs will be played from November 30 to December 6 in Ranchi, Raipur and Visakhapatnam. The T20Is will run from December 9 to 19 across Cuttack, New Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Ahmedabad.
Temba Bavuma will lead the ODI team while Aiden Markram will captain the T20I side. Both formats will give coach Shukri Conrad a chance to assess form, fitness and roles.
Coach Conrad said the T20Is are a key step toward the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He explained that getting clarity on combinations now will help the team settle early before the tournament.
He also spoke about the absence of Kagiso Rabada, who will not make the tour. Conrad said the group has enough depth to manage without him and added that every gap gives someone else a chance to rise.
South Africa will also welcome back fast bowler Anrich Nortje in the T20I squad. He missed recent tours because of injury but is now fit again. Conrad said the team knows exactly what Nortje brings and is happy to have him back.
The ODI leg of the tour will focus on long-term planning. Conrad said the games will help the management understand what the squad needs while preparing for the 2027 World Cup at home.
South Africa see the India tour as a chance to sharpen skills in tough conditions. The pitches, venues and packed crowds will test young players who are pushing for regular spots.
Conrad said the team wants more players who can step up in pressure moments. He noted they have seen this growth in recent years and want to continue building a strong core.
The return of Nortje adds pace and experience to the attack. His presence, along with Markram’s leadership in T20Is, gives South Africa more stability as they try different line-ups.
Squad depth will be tested in Rabada’s absence. The team will look at how younger bowlers handle the role and whether they can offer long-term value.
The ODI squad led by Bavuma will use these matches to shape plans for the next World Cup cycle. South Africa want clarity on batting roles, especially in the middle order, and more options among all-rounders.
