IND vs NZ 2026: Abhishek Sharma Stars with 84 as India Dominate New Zealand in T20I Opener
Abhishek Sharma’s 84 off 35 powered India to a 48-run win over New Zealand in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead.
India began the five-match T20I series against New Zealand with a strong 48-run win, riding on a stunning knock from Abhishek Sharma and a disciplined bowling effort.
India posted a massive 238/7, their highest T20I total against New Zealand, after being put in to bat in the series opener.
India were in early trouble at 10/2, but Abhishek and captain Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings with a 99-run stand for the third wicket. The partnership changed the momentum completely.
Abhishek smashed 84 off just 35 balls, hitting eight sixes and racing to his fifty in only 20 balls. He attacked from the start and never allowed New Zealand to settle.
Suryakumar played the anchor role, rotating strike and picking his moments, which allowed Abhishek to play freely through the middle overs.
The scoring did not slow down at the end. Hardik Pandya chipped in with a quick 25 off 16 balls, while Rinku Singh finished strongly with an unbeaten 44 to push India well past 230.
New Zealand’s chase began badly as they lost two wickets in the first nine balls. Despite that, they reached 50 in the powerplay, mainly due to counter-attacking shots from Glenn Phillips.
Phillips kept New Zealand in the hunt with a powerful 78 off 40 balls, but wickets at regular intervals hurt the visitors. The asking rate kept climbing as India tightened the screws.
Varun Chakaravarthy delivered the key blows, removing Tim Robinson and Mark Chapman, and later getting rid of Phillips to end any real hopes of a comeback.
New Zealand eventually finished on 190/7, falling well short as India went 1-0 up in the series.
