Washington Sundar delivered a stunning spell of off-spin at Lord’s on Day 4 of the third Test against England, finishing with figures of 4 for 22.
It’s not just the impact of the wickets that stood out, but the fact that he now holds the best figures by an Indian spinner at the venue this century, bettering legends like Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and R Ashwin.
A Historic Spell At The Home Of Cricket
England were 98 for 4 at lunch, and despite a small fight from Joe Root and Ben Stokes, they could only manage 192 in their second innings.
Sundar’s spell was crucial in that collapse. He first removed Root and Jamie Smith, then returned to get the big wicket of Stokes and cleaned up Shoaib Bashir to wrap up the innings.
His economy rate of 1.8 made it the most economical four-wicket haul by a visiting spinner at Lord’s since 2001.
The last time an Indian spinner made such a mark at Lord’s was Bishan Singh Bedi, who took 6 for 226 in 1974. Kumble’s best at the venue was 3 for 84 in 2007.
Ashwin and Harbhajan, despite their many achievements, couldn’t crack the Lord’s code the way Sundar just did.

Jasprit Bumrah also played his part, picking up 2 for 38 and knocking over Woakes and Carse. Siraj was fiery early in the day, giving India early breakthroughs and setting the tone.

With both teams having scored 387 in the first innings, it all comes down to India chasing 193 to win the Test and take a 2-1 lead in the series. The pitch is still offering a bit of help, but India will back their batting line-up to get the job done on the final day.
