Ravi Shastri slams umpires for ball change delay at Lord’s, says, "Why are they in the box in the first place?"

The incident took place during India’s first innings, when England requested a ball change but had to wait several minutes due to the match officials’ delay.

Confusion at Lord’s Over Ball Change

It all started after 56 overs, when the English pacers, struggling for movement, asked the umpire to check the ball.

Earlier in the session, Jofra Archer had also asked for a change, but the ball had passed the ring test, so the request was denied.

However, this time, just before play was about to resume after the drinks break, a box full of replacement balls was brought in.

The umpires then spent a few extra minutes choosing a new one, which led to an unnecessary delay.

Shastri, Ward Question Umpires’ Decision-Making:

Speaking on air, Shastri said:

“Why are they in the box in the first place if you’re not going to check them earlier? What’s the point of wasting time in front of the players and the crowd?”

He was clearly frustrated with the delay, especially as it disrupted the momentum of the game, with Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul well set at the crease.

Former England batter Ian Ward also raised a similar point, questioning why the umpires waited until after the break to inspect the balls, when they could have done it in advance and avoided wasting time.

The Lord’s Test has already seen multiple moments of drama, from flying ants to heated player exchanges, and this delay only added to the list.
