‘I’ll Never Celebrate a Series Defeat’ – Gautam Gambhir Ignores Rohit & Kohli Performance
Gautam Gambhir downplays Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s individual feats after India’s ODI loss to Australia, saying he “can never celebrate a series defeat” as coach.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir made a strong statement after the 1-2 ODI series loss to Australia, making it clear that individual brilliance means little to him if the team doesn’t win.
Despite Rohit Sharma being named Player of the Series and Virat Kohli scoring an unbeaten 74 in the final match, Gambhir chose not to mention either of the two veterans during his post-series comments, focusing solely on India’s defeat.
The recently concluded series marked the return of Rohit and Kohli to international cricket after almost eight months.
While Rohit impressed with scores of 8, 73, and 121*, India lost the first two matches in Perth and Adelaide before winning the final game in Sydney.
Kohli, meanwhile, endured a tough start with two ducks before bouncing back in the third ODI.
But Gambhir’s words were blunt. Speaking to BCCI.TV, he said, “I’ve always believed it’s not about individual performances.”
“Yes, I can be happy for the players, but ultimately, we lost the ODI series, that’s the bottom line. And as a coach, I can never celebrate a series loss.”
The former India opener emphasized that his role as a coach is to prioritize results over personal achievements.
“As a player, I could appreciate individual performances. But as a coach, it’s my responsibility to make sure we, as a nation, never celebrate a series defeat. Ultimately, we represent India,” he added.
Notably, Rohit Sharma was replaced by Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain before the series, marking the beginning of a new phase in the team’s leadership transition.
After the ODI disappointment, India bounced back in the T20I series, defeating Australia 2-1, with two games washed out.
Gambhir called the win a “positive step,” but reiterated that the bigger goal remains next year’s T20 World Cup.
“The T20 series was good, but we still have work to do. The goal isn’t just winning series, it’s winning the World Cup,” Gambhir concluded.
