Gautam Gambhir Responds to Rumours on Relationship With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Gautam Gambhir addresses rumours about tensions with Kohli and Rohit, stressing honesty and intent in India’s dressing room culture.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has addressed talk about his relationship with senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Speaking at a sports conclave, Gambhir said honesty and intent inside the dressing room matter more than personal equations.
Speculation about tension between Gambhir and the two senior stars has been circulating on social media for months. The talk grew louder after Kohli and Rohit stepped away from some formats of the game.
Gambhir did not go into personal details about either player. Instead, he explained the values he believes should guide decisions inside the team environment.
He said every member of the dressing room deserves equal respect and honesty. According to Gambhir, his approach is the same whether he is speaking to a senior player, a young cricketer, or a support staff member.
“Yes, I am human and I should be allowed to make mistakes as well. Just like anyone else, players should be allowed to make mistakes,” Gambhir said while speaking to RevSportz.
“I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months. I don’t shy away from that, but I’ve always believed in one thing. Wrong decision with right intent is acceptable, but wrong decision with wrong intent is absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room.”
Gambhir has been India’s head coach for around a year and a half. During that period, he has been known for taking bold calls and backing his views strongly.
He admitted that not every decision he has taken during his tenure would have been perfect. However, he insisted that the intent behind those decisions has always been honest.
“For me it is very simple. Till the time I am doing everything with honesty, till the time I can be honest to everyone in that dressing room, not only one or two people, but everyone from the masseur to the assistant coach, I can look in their eyes and I can talk to them,” he said.
“I think I’m doing a fair job with my position. And that is one thing which I can live with. That is something I can promise you in the last 18 or 20 months, whatever my tenure has been.”
