CPL 2023: Indian Cricket Star Set to Play in Caribbean Premier League
CPL 2023 will kick off from August 16 with the final is scheduled to be played on September 24
Former India and Chennai Super Kings batter Ambati Rayudu has become the second player from the country to participate in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after joining St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
The right-handed batter will be plying his trade for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean-based tournament after the franchise signed him as their marquee player for the upcoming season.
“I am sure Ambati’s seasoned expertise of having won multiple championships with various teams in an illustrious career in India will undoubtedly enrich the experience of our young players as we chase our second CPL title in 2023,” said Patriots owner Mahesh Ramani.
Rayudu announced his retirement from international and Indian cricket after helping Chennai Super Kings win their fifth Indian Premier League title earlier in May this year.
Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not let active players participate in overseas T20 leagues. However, retired players can play in those tournaments.
Meanwhile, recent reports suggested that the BCCI is mulling over introducing a one-year cooling-off period for retired Indian players before they can participate in overseas franchise leagues.
It could be one of the reasons behind Ambati Rayudu’s withdrawal from Major League Cricket after signing up for Texas Super Kings. While the BCCI has not introduced the policy yet, it would be interesting to see whether the 37-year-old will make an appearance in CPL.
The 2023 edition of the Caribbean Premier League will kick off from August 16 with the final of the tournament scheduled to be played on September 24. The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots will kick start their campaign against Trinbago Knight Riders on August 19 in St Lucia.
