India’s top order also produced a rare record in T20 World Cup knockout matches.
Abhishek Sharma scored 52 off 21 balls and Ishan Kishan made 54 from 25 balls. Along with Samson’s 89, it became the first time the top three batters all scored fifties in a T20 World Cup knockout game.
Jasprit Bumrah delivered one of the best bowling performances in a T20 World Cup final.
He finished with 4 for 15, the best figures by a fast bowler in the history of the tournament’s final.
Axar Patel supported Bumrah with three wickets for 27 runs. His spell broke New Zealand’s middle order and ended hopes of a comeback.
New Zealand were eventually restricted to 159 in reply.
India Break Their New Zealand Hoodoo
Before this final, India had never beaten New Zealand in a T20 World Cup match.
