Abhishek, who recently rose to the No.1 spot in ICC T20I rankings, was one of India’s biggest stars during the Asia Cup 2025. He smashed 314 runs in seven matches, including three fifties, and finished with a stunning strike rate of 200. His fearless batting at the top has made him one of the most dangerous openers in world cricket.

Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai, Lara said he has known Abhishek since their time together at Sunrisers Hyderabad during the COVID years and always believed the youngster had something special.

“I know Abhishek from my SRH days. He’s an amazing player. His bat speed, timing, and the way he hits through the ball are outstanding. I think Yuvraj Singh had a huge influence on him,” Lara said.

The former West Indies captain also revealed that Abhishek often reaches out to him for advice, and what impresses him most is the 24-year-old’s hunger to go beyond white-ball cricket.

“What’s amazing is that even after all this success in T20 and 50-over cricket, he still wants to find a way into the Test team. That shows how big he thinks. It’s really special to see someone that ambitious,” Lara added.
