BCCI Provides Major Update on India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

India likely to retain the New Zealand T20I squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup as BCCI backs continuity before the event.

India are set to back continuity as they move towards the 2026 T20 World Cup, with the squad for the five T20Is against New Zealand expected to form the core of the final World Cup team.

The tournament will run from February 7 to March 8 in the sub-continent. Teams must submit their 15-member squads a month before the start, and any changes after that will only be allowed until a final cutoff date.

A BCCI source said the selectors do not plan major changes. The source explained that the short build-up leaves little room for experiments. He said, “With only 10 T20Is left before the T20 World Cup, you won’t see many changes happening in the squad proper unless someone is ruled out due to injury. Continuity is the biggest reason and the 15 chosen for the series against the Black Caps won’t be tinkered with because of the short turnaround time.”

India have only two series left before the event. The upcoming five T20Is against South Africa will be the last window for coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav to look at new options. After that, the New Zealand series will largely be about locking in roles and building rhythm.

The matches against the Kiwis will be played in Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Vizag, and Trivandrum in late January 2026. The squad named for that series is expected to travel almost unchanged to the World Cup, unless injuries or rare circumstances force adjustments.

The approach follows the BCCI’s pattern from recent ICC events. India used a similar plan during the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025, both of which ended in title wins. The board believes sticking with a set group helps players settle into their roles well before a major event.

For now, the focus remains on using the South Africa series smartly, then fine-tuning combinations against New Zealand before finalizing the 15.
