BBL 2024-25 Qualifier: Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers – Match Highlights and Scorecard

Hobart Hurricanes beat Sydney Sixers by 12 runs in the Qualifier match of the BBL 2024-25.

Hobart Hurricanes displayed nerves of steel to defend their 173-run total, clinching a 12-run win against Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 Qualifier. The victory ensures their place in the final, with bowlers stepping up after a slightly below-par batting performance.

Hurricanes’ Innings: Ben McDermott and Tim David Shine

Opting to bat first, the Hurricanes made a steady start with Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell adding 47 runs in 4.1 overs. Owen’s 36 off 15 balls, featuring three sixes, set the tone early. Caleb Jewell anchored the innings with a patient 40 off 41 balls, while Ben McDermott contributed a crucial 42 from 31 deliveries.

Tim David then provided the late impetus, smashing 25 off just 10 balls, including two sixes. However, the Hurricanes lost wickets at regular intervals, finishing at 173-7. For the Sixers, Jafer Chohan (2/28) and Ben Dwarshuis (2/36) were the standout bowlers.

Sixers’ Chase: Early Collapse Proves Costly

Chasing 174, the Sixers endured a disastrous start. Riley Meredith struck twice in the first three overs, removing Josh Philippe and skipper Moises Henriques, while Cameron Gannon dismissed Jack Edwards cheaply. The Sixers were left reeling at 5-3.

Kurtis Patterson (48 off 33) and Jordan Silk (57 off 44) staged a commendable fightback, adding valuable runs in the middle overs. However, Patterson’s dismissal at 80-4 in the 12th over shifted the momentum back to the Hurricanes.

Despite a late flourish from Lachlan Shaw (33* off 25) and Ben Dwarshuis (16* off 8), the Sixers fell short, managing 161-5 in their 20 overs.

Riley Meredith (2/34) and Cameron Gannon (2/10) were the pick of the bowlers, with Gannon’s economical spell proving decisive. Nathan Ellis chipped in with a wicket, while Chris Jordan kept things tight at the death.
