AUS vs SA 2025: Glenn Maxwell’s Heroics Hand Australia Series Victory Over South Africa in Cairns
Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 62 led Australia to a two-wicket win in Cairns, sealing the T20I series 2-1 against South Africa.
Australia edged out South Africa by two wickets in a thrilling finish at Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns, to seal the T20I series 2-1. Glenn Maxwell was the hero, finishing unbeaten on 62 from 36 balls to guide his team home with just one ball left.
Chasing 173, Australia needed 10 runs from the final over. Maxwell kept his cool and reverse-swept Lungi Ngidi for four to seal victory. Earlier, Mitchell Marsh gave the chase a strong start with 54 in a 66-run opening stand with Travis Head.
South Africa’s bowlers kept fighting. Teen pacer Kwena Maphaka dismissed Marsh and Cameron Green in the same over, while Kagiso Rabada struck twice to remove Tim David and Aaron Hardie. Corbin Bosch impressed too, taking 3 for 26, including two wickets in the 19th over.
But Maxwell proved too good on the night. His aggressive strokeplay and composure under pressure carried Australia past the target.
Batting first, South Africa posted 172 for 7 after an early collapse at 49 for 3 inside seven overs. Dewald Brevis was the standout with 53 off 26 balls, reaching his fifty in only 22 deliveries before Nathan Ellis (3 for 31) dismissed him. Rassie van der Dussen made 38 not out and Tristan Stubbs added 25 to push the total to a competitive score.
Despite those efforts, South Africa could not stop Maxwell from sealing the series. The focus now shifts to the three-match ODI series, which begins in Cairns on Tuesday.
