AUS vs SA 2025: ‘Baby AB’ Set for ODI Bow? Skipper Temba Bavuma Drops Big Hint on Dewald Brevis
Dewald Brevis will make his ODI debut vs Australia in Cairns on Aug 19, with Bavuma and Conrad backing his fearless approach
Dewald Brevis is set to make his ODI debut for South Africa against Australia on Tuesday, August 19, at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns. The 22-year-old, who lit up the recent T20I series, now has the chance to test himself in the 50-over format.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said he is eager to see how Brevis adapts. “It’s always exciting when you see the young faces. Obviously, the big talk has been on Brevis. (He has been) putting up his hand and showing what he is capable of. I am excited to see what he can also bring within the one-day stuff,” Bavuma said at his pre-match press conference.
Head coach Shukri Conrad also hailed Brevis’ impact after his record-breaking T20I century, despite South Africa losing the series 2-1.
“I think sometimes we can be too humble. We don’t show off enough to the world what we’re capable of doing. Like Dewald Brevis does. He’s obviously going to grow older, but I hope he continues to play like a 22-year-old… He’s a breath of fresh air,” Conrad said.
For Brevis, the challenge will be adjusting to the different tempo of ODIs, where innings-building and patience are as vital as power-hitting. The team management hopes he keeps his fearless style while learning the demands of longer cricket.
This will be the first ODI clash between South Africa and Australia since their abandoned meeting at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. With the weather in Cairns set to be clear, a full match is expected this time.
The three-match series is important for both teams as they prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which South Africa will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia.
