Bas de Leede Makes History With First ETPL Half-Century
Bas de Leede made history with the first ETPL half-century, scoring 75 for Amsterdam Flames against Rotterdam Dockers.
Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede made history in the opening match of the European T20 Premier League, scoring the first half-century in the tournament.
Playing for Amsterdam Flames against Rotterdam Dockers at Sportpark Duivesteijn in Voorburg on August 26, de Leede smashed 75 runs from 53 balls.
The 26-year-old played a lone hand as Amsterdam posted 157/8 after being asked to bat first. De Leede scored almost half of his team’s total, with Max O’Dowd’s 25 the next-best score.
De Leede’s innings also became the first 50-plus score in ETPL history, giving the Netherlands international an early place in the tournament’s record books.
The match also saw another ETPL milestone when Logan van Beek became the first bowler to take a wicket in the league’s history.
De Leede continued to lead Amsterdam’s innings despite wickets falling around him. His stay at the crease eventually ended when Anrich Nortje trapped him lbw.
Rotterdam skipper Faf du Plessis had won the toss and chosen to field first, bringing a strong bowling attack into the tournament’s opening fixture.
De Leede came into the game with 74 T20 appearances and seven half-centuries to his name. He added another milestone to that record with a powerful knock that gave Amsterdam a competitive total.
The inaugural ETPL season has now begun with de Leede and van Beek becoming the first players to enter the tournament’s history books.
