Shaheen Afridi To Be Sacked As Pakistan’s T20I Captain? PCB Chief Drops Big Hint
There could be a change in Pakistan’s T20I captaincy before T20 World Cup 2024.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was appointed as the captain of the T20 team in November last year, could potentially be replaced by the Pakistan Cricket Board as they seek better options who can fulfil the role for a longer duration.
Notably, Shaheen Shah Afridi has struggled as captain of the Pakistan T20 team. Even in the recent PSL 2024 season, his team finished at the bottom of the points table with only one win throughout the entire season.
During a press conference, here’s what Mohsin Naqvi said:
“Even I don’t know who the captain will be. Whether Shaheen continues or a new captain comes in will be determined after the fitness camp (starting on Monday),” Moshin Naqvi said.
There are a number of technical factors we will consider, the details of which I do not want to go into. We want a long-term solution, whether it’s Shaheen or a new man. And then we intend to stick by that man, instead of just changing a captain just because you lose a match or captain.”
Following Babar Azam’s resignation from all three formats, Afridi assumed the captaincy of the shortest format. To date, he has captained the national side in only one international series, which resulted in a 1-4 loss to New Zealand.
