AUS vs IND: Fans Question ‘Prithvi Shaw’s Selection After India Opener Bags Duck

Fans on Twitter slammed team India management to trust Prithvi Shaw despite his continuous poor performance.

Virat Kohli led side were off to a awful start in Adelaide after winning the toss and opting to bat first as Mitchell Starc sent Prithvi Shaw packing on a duck in the first over of the Pink ball Test on Thursday.

Shaw, who was trusted to open the batting the visitors ahead of the likes of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, continued his poor run with the willow. Shaw, facing just the second delivery was cleaned up on a good length delivery by Mitchell Starc, which angled away as the batsman dragged into his middle stump. Prithvi Shaw tried to drive the ball while his bat was away from his pads, got a thick edge that crashed into the stumps.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who coaches Prithvi Shaw in IPL, tore into India opener’s batting technique as he pointed out the big gap between bat and pad. “If he does have a chink in his armour it’s the ball which does come back into him…Quite often leaves a big gap between bat and pad and that’s where the Aussies will target,” Ponting said.

Shaw has not been in a good form since the past few months and his inconsistent form for Delhi Capitals saw him being dropped from the playing XI in the IPL 2020 earlier this year. Shaw was sidelined from the XI after a string of low scores and ended the IPL season with only 228 runs from 13 games.

Shaw’s selection as an opener for the first Test ahead of Shubman Gill had raised a few eyebrows as the latter played better in the warm-up games against Australia A. In his last 10 outings, Shaw has had scores of 0, 0, 7, 10, 9, 0, 0, 19, 40 and 3.

Fans were not happy with another failure from Prithvi Shaw as many questioned his selection in the squad ahead of Gill while many called him ‘overconfident’ for another irresponsible knock.
