However, the date and venue are yet to receive formal confirmation from the IPL governing council. The reported details are based on an informal WhatsApp message sent by the BCCI’s logistics team to help franchises plan their travel and other arrangements.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed the board’s intention to bring the auction back to India. The move comes after three straight overseas auctions in Dubai in 2024, Jeddah in 2025 and Abu Dhabi in 2026.

Finding a suitable venue in India was reportedly a challenge because December is a busy wedding season. Despite these difficulties, the BCCI believes a smaller event like a mini auction is easier to organise within the country.

The reported WhatsApp message, quoted by Cricbuzz, read: “The IPL 2027 Player Auction will take place on December 16, 2026 at ITC Grand Goa and auction briefing will be held on December 15, 2026”

Several player trades have already taken place ahead of the auction. Rishabh Pant has reportedly returned to Delhi Capitals after his stint with Lucknow Super Giants, while Kuldeep Yadav has moved to LSG as part of the deal.

Delhi Capitals have also acquired spinner Zeeshan Ansari from Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, SRH have traded pacer T Natarajan as part of their efforts to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.

Mumbai Indians are also preparing for a fresh start after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as head coach ahead of IPL 2027.

The mini auction will give franchises another chance to strengthen their squads and fill key gaps before the next season. However, fans will have to wait for an official announcement before the reported date and venue can be treated as final.
