Mandhana’s full-time captaincy will begin with India’s upcoming tour against Zimbabwe Women. The series will feature three T20Is and three ODIs, marking the start of a new leadership era for the team.

The 30-year-old has already led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. She also has successful captaincy experience in the Women’s Premier League, where she guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to titles in 2024 and 2026.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the leadership change shortly after Harmanpreet announced her decision to step down. The squad for the Zimbabwe series has also been announced.

Mandhana thanked the BCCI, selectors, teammates and supporters for trusting her with the responsibility. She said leading India is a “very special honour” and that she would value the opportunity deeply.

She also acknowledged Harmanpreet’s contribution as captain, praising her commitment and role in the team’s journey over the years.

Mandhana said she understands the responsibility that comes with leading India and wants to learn along the way while giving her best to take Indian cricket forward.

The change comes at an important time for Indian women’s cricket, with Mandhana now set to lead the team in both the T20I and ODI formats. Her first assignment against Zimbabwe will be closely watched as she begins her full-time captaincy.
