IND vs SL 2026: Rishabh Pant Injury Update – India Expect Star Wicketkeeper to Bat on Day 2

Rishabh Pant suffered a blow to his left wrist while batting on Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. India, however, expect the wicketkeeper-batter to return on Day 2.

The injury happened in the 58th over when Sri Lanka pacer Lahiru Kumara bowled a sharp 133kph short ball from around the wicket.

Pant moved across to the off side and tried to pull the ball behind square. He was early into the shot, missed the ball completely and was struck hard on the left wrist of his bottom hand.

The Indian physio came onto the field and treated Pant for several minutes. His wrist was taped before he eventually walked off the field retired hurt.

Pant had scored three runs from 15 balls before leaving the crease. He did not appear to be in extreme pain, but India did not want to take any chances with the injury.

Pant Comfortable After Injury

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak later provided a positive update on Pant’s condition after the close of play.

Kotak said Pant was sitting comfortably in the dressing room and dugout. The wicketkeeper-batter also padded up during the closing overs, although India did not need him to return.

The Indian team expects Pant to be fit enough to resume his innings on Day 2. His return will be important as India look to build a strong first-innings total.

India also have cover available if Pant is unable to continue. Dhruv Jurel and KL Rahul are part of the playing XI and can take over wicketkeeping duties if Pant has any swelling or discomfort.
