India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Preview: India Begin WTC Push in Galle
India face Sri Lanka in the Galle Test as both teams begin their WTC campaign with key players missing.
India begin their next World Test Championship campaign against Sri Lanka when the first Test starts at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on August 15. The visitors will look to start strongly after a difficult run in Test cricket.
The match also marks a major milestone for Galle, which will host its 50th Test. It is the first venue in Asia to reach the landmark, adding another special moment to the five-day contest.
India Aim to Reset in WTC Race
India captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that the team has a big target ahead. With nine Tests remaining in their current WTC campaign, India are aiming to win six or seven of them.
India will have to do that without Jasprit Bumrah, who is missing from the squad. His absence puts extra responsibility on the other bowlers, especially on a pitch where spin is expected to become more important as the game moves forward.
Gill also pointed to the role of wind at open grounds like Galle. “In open grounds, the wind plays a huge role,” he said, explaining how the conditions can affect a batter’s approach against spin.
The pitch is expected to offer good batting conditions early in the Test, but hot and humid weather could make the game demanding. As the surface wears, spinners are likely to get more turn and drift.
Sri Lanka Look to Use Home Advantage
Sri Lanka will hope their knowledge of local conditions can help them put India under pressure. They will also be without Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, both of whom are unavailable due to injuries.
Niroshan Dickwella is set to return as wicketkeeper, with Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva backing the experienced option. “Galle is a tough place to keep wickets and we have to get our best wicketkeeper on board,” he said.
Off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha is also expected to feature as Sri Lanka prepare to attack India’s batters with spin.
India are likely to hand Dhruv Jurel the wicketkeeper-batter role ahead of Sarfaraz Khan. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar is also expected to make the XI, giving India another spin option.
With both teams dealing with key absences, the opening Test could come down to who adapts faster to Galle’s conditions. India will want a winning start to their WTC push, while Sri Lanka will look to make home advantage count.
