The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Subhadeep Ghosh as the new fielding coach of the Indian men’s cricket team ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The move is part of a wider reshuffle in the team’s support staff under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Ghosh replaces T. Dilip, whose contract ended after India’s recent tour of the United Kingdom. The BCCI decided not to extend Dilip’s tenure following a review of the team’s performances in the field.
According to reports, the board wanted a fresh approach to improve India’s fielding standards after a series of costly catching mistakes and below-par performances. The appointment is also part of a broader support staff overhaul, which has already seen assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate leave the setup.
Instead of looking overseas, the BCCI chose to promote a coach from its own domestic system. Ghosh has built a strong reputation over the years while working with several Indian teams across different age groups.
A former right-handed batter from Digboi, Assam, Ghosh represented Assam and Railways in 34 first-class and List A matches between 1994 and 2005. After retiring from competitive cricket, he moved into coaching and developed into one of India’s most experienced specialist fielding coaches.
He has spent more than a decade working with the National Cricket Academy, now known as the Centre of Excellence. During this period, he has coached India A teams, the senior India Women’s team and several youth squads.
Ghosh also worked with Delhi Daredevils, now Delhi Capitals, during the 2018 Indian Premier League season. His experience at both domestic and international levels made him a strong candidate for the role.
One of the biggest highlights of his coaching career came earlier this year when he served as the fielding coach of India’s Under-19 team that won the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He has also been part of Indian squads that secured gold medals at the Asian Games.
With India’s Test series against Sri Lanka approaching, Ghosh’s immediate task will be to improve the team’s catching efficiency, ground fielding and overall discipline. The BCCI will hope his experience in developing young talent and refining fielding standards helps strengthen one of the most important aspects of the team’s performance.
