[Watch] Gautam Gambhir Sidesteps Question on Shubman Gill’s T20 World Cup 2026 Snub
Gautam Gambhir dodges questions on Shubman Gill’s T20 World Cup 2026 omission as India back impact players over leadership.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir avoided all questions on Shubman Gill being dropped from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad when he landed at Delhi airport on Friday.
A short video showed Gambhir walking straight past waiting reporters without stopping or reacting. The clip quickly went viral and added fuel to the debate around Gill’s shock exclusion.
Gill was left out of the 15-member squad despite being India’s Test and ODI vice-captain. The decision surprised many fans, especially since he had returned to T20Is during the Asia Cup earlier this year.
In pure numbers, Gill’s T20I returns were modest. He scored 291 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 137.26, with no half-centuries and a highest score of 47. Selectors felt his impact did not match other options.
Gill also carried a toe injury during the South Africa series, which kept him out of key games. In his absence, Sanju Samson grabbed his chance with an unbeaten 37 off 22 balls, strengthening his case at the top.
India have gone with a clear attacking plan. Samson and Abhishek Sharma are set to open, while Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan add depth and power in the middle order.
What stood out was the retention of captain Suryakumar Yadav, despite his poor run. SKY has managed only 218 runs in 19 innings over the past year, striking at 123.2, numbers that raised questions.
A PTI report suggested leadership played a big role in saving SKY. It added that the selection panel under Gambhir values immediate impact over long-term leadership roles.
One report summed it up sharply, saying, “SKY, who by virtue of being the skipper, kept his place despite a horrific one-year run, while Gill suffered as his game didn’t seem as impactful as Abhishek Sharma’s.”
Another line from the same report reflected Gambhir’s known mindset. “Anyone who knows Gambhir knows that for him, winning is not everything but the only thing. Today it was Gill, tomorrow it could be Suryakumar.”

With Gambhir choosing silence for now, the focus stays firmly on India’s bold selection calls and whether this high-risk approach delivers at the 2026 T20 World Cup.
