Rohit Sharma has achieved the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings for the first time in his 18-year international career. The Indian captain climbed to the top with 781 rating points after a strong series against Australia, surpassing teammate Shubman Gill.
This milestone comes after Rohit’s Player of the Series performance in Australia, where he scored 202 runs in three ODIs. His unbeaten century in Sydney stood out as a classic Rohit knock, mixing calm control with clean hitting.

“You expect tough conditions in Australia. Quality bowlers. Gotta understand things and try your best. Haven’t played for a long time, good prep. Slightly confident coming in. We couldn’t win the series – will still take a lot of positives. Young side, there will be a lot of learnings for them. When I came into the squad, I remember how seniors helped us, it’s now our job to do the same,” Rohit said after the third ODI in Sydney.
“Never easy playing in Australia, just abroad. We need to share our experience, help them create game plans. I still go back to basics in Australia all these years. It’s something I need to pass on. I love playing in Australia in general. I’ve had a decent memory in SCG – great pitch, ground and crowd. I love doing what I do and hope to continue to do that,” Rohit concluded.
Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran jumped to second place with 764 points, continuing his rise in world cricket. Gill, who had held the top spot for several months, slipped to third with 745 points. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli dropped one place to sixth after scoring back-to-back ducks in Perth and Adelaide, though he finished the series with a gritty 74 not out in Sydney.
Rohit is expected to return to action in India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30 in Rajkot. Fans will be eager to see if he can continue his remarkable form as India prepares for a busy home season.
