Will Kohli-Rohit Play 2027 World Cup? Shubman Gill Gives Bold Reply
Shubman Gill backs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for 2027 World Cup, says India still needs their experience and leadership.
Newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill has put all speculations to rest about the future of Indian cricket icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, making it clear that both senior players remain a crucial part of India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi, Gill said there’s no substitute for the experience and match-winning ability that Rohit and Kohli bring to the side.
“Yes, definitely,” Gill said when asked if he sees the duo playing a big role in the next 50-over World Cup. “The experience both of them have, and the matches they’ve won for India, there are very few players in the world with that level of skill and quality. You can’t replace that.”
Both veterans have already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, keeping ODIs as their only active format. While Kohli is currently in London and Rohit in Mumbai, both are expected to rejoin the squad before the team leaves for Australia on October 15.
Gill, who will lead India in the upcoming ODI series against Australia starting October 19, said he hopes to bring the same calmness and team unity that Rohit instilled during his captaincy.
“It’s an honour to lead India,” he said. “The calmness of Rohit bhai and the friendships he built in the team, that’s something I want to imbibe.”
