R Ashwin has joined Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League season, and GM Trent Copeland called him the biggest signing in BBL history.
Ashwin, who has taken 765 international wickets, is the first capped Indian player in the Australian T20 league.
Copeland said Ashwin’s arrival sends a strong message to the tournament. “All eight franchises wanted Ashwin, but he has chosen us,” he added.
With stars like Babar Azam also set to play, Copeland said security will be increased for the league. He praised the BBL, saying Ashwin’s participation shows how strong the tournament has become.
When asked about special treatment for Ashwin, Copeland referenced Chris Gayle’s time with Thunder, saying he will ensure overseas players have a great experience while managing the franchise budget responsibly.
