Rohit Sharma’s Future Doubtful As Abhishek Sharma Set to be Picked for Australia ODIs
Abhishek Sharma could earn an ODI call-up for India’s Australia tour, putting fresh question marks over Rohit Sharma’s future.
Abhishek Sharma’s breakthrough run in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 could soon open doors to ODI cricket.
According to a Times of India report, the left-hander has caught the eye of chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his team and may be in line for an ODI debut in the three-match series against Australia starting October 19.
Abhishek has been India’s standout batter in the Asia Cup, scoring 173 runs in four matches, the highest in the tournament so far. His strike rate of 208.43 has made him one of the most dangerous players at the top of the order.
What strengthens his case is his ability to chip in with the ball. Abhishek has six wickets from 12 T20I bowling innings, including a couple of overs in the Asia Cup group stage.
He has also been working hard in the nets, often seen bowling long spells. In fact, he recently turned up at an optional session as a bowler to help close friend Shubman Gill prepare against spin.
With his all-round skills, Abhishek looks like a natural fit in Gautam Gambhir’s set-up. But his possible entry into the ODI squad has thrown fresh spotlight on Rohit Sharma’s future in the format.
India have 27 ODIs left before the 2027 World Cup, and selectors will need to decide whether to persist with the Gill-Rohit pair or promote the Gill-Abhishek partnership that has flourished in T20Is.
If Abhishek breaks into the XI, it could also affect Yashasvi Jaiswal’s chances. The youngster made his ODI debut earlier this year against England but missed the Asia Cup T20I squad.
