“It’s Frustrating” – Shreyas Iyer On Not Being Selected for Asia Cup 2025
Shreyas Iyer speaks on the frustration of missing Asia Cup 2025 selection despite strong IPL form, stressing honesty, integrity, and team success.
Shreyas Iyer has opened up on the mental challenges players face when left out of the squad. His comments came after he was not picked in India’s side for the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE.
The announcement of the squad sparked debate among fans and experts. Iyer was expected to play a major role after his strong season in the Indian Premier League with Punjab Kings, where he impressed as both captain and batter.
Speaking about his emotions, Iyer admitted frustration is natural when a player feels they deserve a place.
“It’s only frustrating when you truly believe you deserve a place in the playing XI,” Iyer said.
He added that seeing teammates perform well helps shift the focus.
“When you see someone performing well, playing consistently, and giving their best for the team, you support them. In the end, the main objective is for the team to win and when the team wins, everyone is happy.”
Iyer also underlined the value of integrity.
“Even if you don’t get an opportunity, you must continue doing your work with honesty. It’s not something you do only when people are watching,” he said.
Since India’s T20 World Cup triumph last year, Iyer has scored 949 runs in 26 games. He has averaged close to 50 with a strike rate near 180. His run tally includes one century, seven fifties and a highest score of 130 not out.
India will open their Asia Cup campaign against the UAE on September 10 in Dubai. They will face Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 4 stage.
