“Suryakumar Yadav to be sacked as India’s T20I captain” – Former England Cricketer Bold Warning

Monty Panesar warns BCCI could sack Suryakumar Yadav if India fail in Asia Cup 2025, says Shubman Gill ready to take over as all-format captain.

Suryakumar Yadav will captain India in the 2025 Asia Cup, his first major assignment as T20I skipper in a multi-nation event. The selectors chose him ahead of Hardik Pandya, and he now faces the challenge of defending both the Asia Cup and the World Cup titles.

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has warned that Suryakumar’s position could come under threat. Speaking to India TV, he said Shubman Gill may replace him if India underperform.

“Shubman Gill has the qualities to become India’s captain in all three formats. If Suryakumar Yadav struggles in T20 cricket or cannot secure the Asia Cup, the selectors might look beyond him and give the captain’s armband to Shubman Gill. After Rohit Sharma moves away, there’s a strong chance Gill will take charge across formats,” Panesar said.

Gill has returned to the T20I side as vice-captain. Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, he has regularly served in the role, first as Rohit’s deputy against Sri Lanka and later in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The opener is already seen as a future all-format captain. He took charge of the Test team after Rohit’s retirement and continues as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. In the IPL, he leads Gujarat Titans. Gill has also captained India in five T20Is and five Tests, building his leadership record further.
