Bad News for IPL Fans: Ticket Prices Shoot Up With 40% GST Hike

IPL tickets to cost more as GST rises from 28% to 40%, making it pricier for fans to watch Dhoni, Kohli live in stadiums.

Fans planning to watch MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and other stars in the next IPL season will soon feel a heavier pinch in their wallets. The GST Council has announced a new tax rate of 40 percent on tickets for the league, up from the current 28 percent.

The change, which comes into effect from September 22, means an extra 400 rupees in tax on every 1,000 rupees spent. For general entry tickets, this is a noticeable rise. But the real impact could be sharper in premium sections like hospitality boxes, where prices are already sky-high.

The council has decided to put the IPL in the same category as luxury cars, casinos and tobacco, arguing that the cash-rich T20 league is closer to high-end entertainment than traditional sport.

Other franchise-based leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League could also be affected, though clarity is still awaited.

International and domestic cricket matches, however, are expected to stay in the 18 percent tax slab. Those games are seen as pure sporting activity, unlike the IPL which is increasingly driven by big sponsors, celebrity owners and massive broadcasting deals.

For fans, the GST 2.0 ruling means higher costs to catch their favourite players in action from the stands.

While some argue this could hurt affordability and stadium turnout, others believe the extra money might eventually flow back into sports development.
