The discussions began soon after Ashwin announced his retirement from the IPL earlier this year. The veteran off-spinner had hinted at exploring T20 leagues around the world, and Australia now looks like his first stop.

Reports suggest a move to a Melbourne-based franchise is most likely if the deal is finalised. CA CEO Todd Greenberg confirmed the approach, saying the board was excited about the possibility. With many clubs operating on tight salary caps, CA is exploring bespoke payment solutions similar to how David Warner was paid on a per-match basis.
