After Asia Cup Snub, Shreyas Iyer Rejects Captaincy Offer
Shreyas Iyer turned down West Zone’s Duleep Trophy captaincy, with Shardul Thakur taking over after Asia Cup 2025 snub.
Shreyas Iyer has declined the chance to lead West Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy. According to a report in the Times of India, the selectors had first approached Iyer for the role, but after he turned it down, the captaincy was handed to Shardul Thakur.
While Iyer has made himself available for the tournament, sources suggest his focus remains on preparing for white-ball cricket with his personal coach, Pravin Amre.
With the Asia Cup starting on September 9 and the Duleep Trophy semifinals scheduled from September 4 to 7, Iyer’s participation in the knockout stages would have been uncertain if he had made India’s squad.
A source told TOI, “Yes, it’s true that Iyer declined the offer from the West Zone selection committee to captain the side. Following that, Sanjay Patil, the chairman of the committee and also the Mumbai chief selector, reached out to Thakur to take on the captaincy, which Thakur happily accepted.”
Asia Cup Snub After IPL Brilliance
Iyer’s decision comes days after he was left out of India’s Asia Cup squad. The omission surprised many, as the 29-year-old had enjoyed a standout IPL season with Punjab Kings, scoring 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 and helping the franchise reach their first final in 11 years.
