R Ashwin is a Liar! CSK Issues Clarification on Dewald Brevis Signing

Chennai Super Kings deny R Ashwin’s claims on Dewald Brevis signing, confirm IPL rules were followed in 2.20 crore deal.

Chennai Super Kings have issued a clarification on the signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis for IPL 2025. The franchise responded after Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that CSK had to pay more than the permitted amount to secure the 22-year-old.

Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, said that Brevis initially demanded more than what CSK offered, and the team eventually agreed to his request. The statement triggered debate, as IPL rules restrict the fee a replacement can receive.

Brevis had gone unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction, where his base price was INR 75 lakh. Later, CSK signed him as an injury replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh, who was ruled out of the season. Singh was bought for INR 2.20 crore at the auction, and Brevis received the same amount as his replacement.

In their official note, CSK made it clear that every step of the signing was as per IPL regulations. “Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a replacement player during IPL 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules,” the statement read.

The team also highlighted clause 6.6 under ‘Replacement Players’, which clearly states that a replacement cannot be paid more than the fee of the injured player he replaces. CSK said the rule was followed in Brevis’s case.

Brevis in Top Form

Brevis has been in excellent touch in international cricket. Against Australia in the second T20I earlier this month, he smashed his maiden hundred, scoring 125 not out off 56 balls to help South Africa level the series.

In IPL 2025, he was one of the few positives for CSK in an otherwise tough season. The five-time champions ended at the bottom of the table for the first time, but Brevis’s fearless batting brought a new spark to their top order.

The 22-year-old, who made his South Africa debut in 2023, had earlier played for Mumbai Indians before joining CSK this season.
