Ravi Shastri Reveals Next Big Thing in Indian Cricket and It’s Not Jaiswal or Akash Deep
Shubman Gill’s Stunning England Series Earns Praise from Former Indian Great Ravi Shastri
Shubman Gill has taken a giant step forward in his career, leading India to a 2-2 draw against England in his first Test series as captain. At just 25, Gill scored a remarkable 754 runs in the series at an average of 75.40, hitting four centuries, including a career-best 269.
His form and leadership earned him the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for July. Former India coach Ravi Shastri was full of praise, calling Gill “India’s rising star” and tipping him to be a mainstay for years to come.
“No question, Shubman Gill. He’ll be around for a long, long time because we’ve seen what kind of series he’s had here,” Shastri said when asked about who the rising star of Indian cricket.

Shastri described Gill as composed and regal, with a fluent batting style and the ability to play long innings.
“He’s right up there. He’ll be up there. He’s composed. He’s very regal. He’s got that, you know, when you look at him, he’s something regal about him. The way he bats, he’s very easy on the eye, very fluent and has the ability to play the long innings,” he added.
Gill’s 2025 numbers underline his class. Across formats, he has scored 1,234 runs in 20 innings (14 matches) at an average of 64.94, with six hundreds and two fifties. Only England’s Ben Duckett has more runs this year, with 1,290 in 27 innings at 47.77. Among Indian players, KL Rahul has 741 runs at 46.31, while Ravindra Jadeja has 605 runs at 67.22.
