Rohit Sharma Begins Training for 2027 ODI World Cup with Abhishek Nayar
Rohit Sharma trains hard after break, sparking talk on ODI captaincy future as Shubman Gill emerges as possible successor
Rohit Sharma is one of the biggest names in Indian cricket, and also one of the finest ODI players the world has seen. Fans know him for his calm batting, ability to score big runs in pressure matches, and leadership in limited-overs cricket.
He has scored 32 centuries in ODIs, more than anyone except Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. His career numbers are staggering: 273 matches, 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76, three double hundreds, and the highest ODI score in history, 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata. He was also Player of the Match when India beat New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final.
Rohit recently retired from Test cricket before the England series to focus only on ODIs. After the IPL 2025 season, he took a short family holiday in England before returning to Mumbai. Soon after, he began training again with his close friend and former BCCI assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. Those sessions are seen as proof that he is still serious about staying at the top level.
There is talk in cricket circles about the future of India’s ODI captaincy. Shubman Gill is being seen as a possible successor, but some in the team management believe Rohit should lead for a little longer, at least until he gets a farewell series as captain. The 2027 ODI World Cup is still 26 months away, giving him time to decide his plans.
For now, the focus remains on the man who has given Indian fans so many memories with the bat. Whether or not he is captain in the future, Rohit Sharma’s ODI legacy is already secure
