In Stokes’ absence, England will go in with a revamped side for the series decider. Surrey’s Jacob Bethell is set to debut and will bat at No.6. The Oval crowd will also witness the return of local favourites Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton, while Josh Tongue returns to strengthen the pace attack.

Stokes’ injury is a big setback for the hosts, who lead the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-1 but looked worn down during India’s gritty escape in Manchester.

Jofra Archer, who was hoping for a fairytale comeback, is also unavailable as England continue to manage his fitness ahead of a packed calendar.

England now look to seal the series without their talismanic captain, while India will be eyeing a historic 2-2 comeback at The Oval.

England’s Playing XI for fifth Test:

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (C), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue.
