Bharat Ratna for Virat Kohli! Ex-Indian Cricketers Makes Special Appeal

Suresh Raina has urged the Indian government to honour Virat Kohli with the Bharat Ratna for his service to Indian cricket.

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has made a special appeal for Virat Kohli to be honoured with the Bharat Ratna India’s highest civilian award for his massive contribution to Indian cricket, especially in the longest format.

Kohli, one of the greatest modern-day batters, recently retired from Test cricket after a career that lasted 14 years. He played 123 matches, scored 9230 runs at an average of 46.85, and led India in 68 Tests the most by any Indian captain after MS Dhoni. He is also among the few Indian captains to win a Test series in Australia.

A Test Career That Shaped Indian Cricket

In a heartfelt note on social media, Kohli announced his decision to step away from Test cricket. He wrote:

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.”
He added that though the decision was tough, it felt right. “As I step away from this format, it’s not easy but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had,” he said.

Kohli’s last Test century came in Perth in November 2024, ending a long drought since his previous ton in July 2023 against West Indies. Though his average dropped in recent years, his overall impact on Indian Test cricket remains huge. Under his leadership, India reached the first-ever World Test Championship final in 2021.

What Lies Ahead for Team India

With Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin retiring from Test cricket, India is entering a transition phase. Shubman Gill is expected to take over the captaincy, with KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah among the few experienced names left in the squad.

Kohli and Rohit will continue playing ODIs, having already retired from T20Is after winning the World Cup last year.

Raina’s Big Statement

Raina, who played alongside Kohli for many years, believes the Indian government should recognize Kohli’s achievements with the Bharat Ratna.

While the award has been rarely given to sportspersons. Sachin Tendulkar being the only cricketer to receive it Raina’s appeal reflects the love and respect Kohli commands within the cricketing world.

His Test journey might have ended, but for millions of fans, Virat Kohli’s legacy in whites will be remembered for generations.
