Ravi Shastri Spoke to Virat Kohli Just Before His Test Retirement — Here’s What He Said

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that he had a private chat with Virat Kohli just a week before the star batter announced his retirement from Test cricket.

Kohli, who shared the news on Instagram on May 12, confirmed his decision to step away from red-ball cricket after a 14-year-long career.

Speaking on the ICC Review show, Shastri said, “I did speak to him about it. His mind was very clear. He told me he had given everything to the game.” Shastri further said that Kohli had no doubts and felt the time was right to move on.

‘No Regrets,’ Says Kohli in Chat With Shastri

Shastri mentioned that Kohli showed no signs of regret while discussing his decision. “There were no doubts in his mind, which made me think the time is right. The mind had told the body — it’s time to go,” Shastri added.

Kohli ends his Test career with 123 matches, scoring 9230 runs, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also led India in 68 Test matches, winning 40 of them — the most by any Indian captain.

Shastri, who worked closely with Kohli during his coaching tenure, praised his commitment. “If he decided to do something, he gave it everything. That level of involvement can lead to burnout if not managed,” he said.

Virat Kohli’s Intensity Made Him a Fan Favourite

Shastri also spoke about how Kohli’s energy was felt not just on the field but also in living rooms of cricket fans.

“There was always a love-hate relationship with him. His intensity got under people’s skin, but it also made him special,” Shastri said.

He added that even though Kohli surprised him with the timing, he understands the mental toll it can take. “He’s probably fitter than half the team physically, but if you’re mentally overcooked, the body follows.”

Kohli’s retirement came as a shock to many, but as per Shastri, it was a decision made with clarity and peace of mind.
