The 2025 edition of SA20 is here, marking the third season of the tournament. It will commence on January 9, and the final will be played on February 9 at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. 

The SA20 is South Africa’s top T20 cricket league, which was launched in 2023. The tournament was made to bring exciting T20 cricket to South African fans and give local players a chance to play with international stars. 

The IPL helped South Africa start this league, offering their experience to make it successful. The tournament has quickly become popular not just in South Africa but worldwide. Many even consider it the second most successful T20 league after the IPL. 

The league has six teams, each from a different city in South Africa. These teams are owned by groups that also own teams in the IPL. The teams play a round-robin format, where each team faces every other team. The top teams then move to the playoffs, leading to an exciting final to find the winner.

Franchises of SA20

The six franchises in SA20 are:

  1. Joburg Super Kings – Based in Johannesburg, owned by the same group as Chennai Super Kings (IPL).
  2. Paarl Royals – Based in Paarl, owned by the same group as Rajasthan Royals (IPL).
  3. Durban’s Super Giants – Based in Durban, owned by the same group as Lucknow Super Giants (IPL), led by Sanjiv Goenka.
  4. Pretoria Capitals – Based in Pretoria, owned by the same group as Delhi Capitals (IPL).
  5. Sunrisers Eastern Cape – Based in Gqeberha, owned by the same group as Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL).
  6. MI Cape Town – Based in Cape Town, owned by the same group as Mumbai Indians (IPL).

Format of the Tournament

The SA20 follows a league format, with each team playing against every other team during the round-robin stage. The top four teams on the points table move forward to the playoffs, which are:

  1. Qualifier 1 – The top two teams compete for a direct entry into the final.
  2. Eliminator – The 3rd and 4th placed teams play to determine the winner who will face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2.
  3. Qualifier 2 – The winner of the Eliminator faces the loser of Qualifier 1 for the final spot in the championship match.
  4. Final – The winner of Qualifier 1 faces the winner of Qualifier 2 in the final to decide the champion.

As for the winners and runners-up, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the tournament in 2024, beating Durban Super Giants in the final. In 2023, Sunrisers Eastern Cape also won the trophy, defeating Pretoria Capitals in the final.
